Bikes of the bunch - Speedvagen

Moving further afield from the Göteborg scene, the next in the Bikes of the Bunch series is a hand-built creation from Sacha White of Vanilla Bicycles. CX Sweden spoke to its owner Patch Hofweber after the Helsingborg round of the CX Cup.

>OK so how did you end up owning a bike hand-built and hand-painted from Portland, USA?
I’m born and raised in Northern California, so Portland wasn’t too far off. In 2010 a friend tipped me off that a racer from the original Speedvagen team was selling his bike from 2007. At this point Sacha White’s beautiful work was all over the internet and the pedigree of the bike was reassuring. It was a good deal, so I jumped at the chance to own one.

 >Did you have any input into the geometry?
The idea behind Speedvagen is limited-run bicycles, with geometry and sizes predetermined, not even the factory team got anything custom. That being said, Sacha chose a lower bottom-bracket compared to traditional ’cross bikes, the idea is that it’s more stable when pedaling through turns. This works well for American ’cross courses, which have fewer hairpin turns than Europe.

>Did you have any input into the paint scheme?
The original paint-scheme was matched to the 2007 kits. After a crash in 2011, I took it back to Vanilla to get the downtube replaced. I picked out the colors I wanted, then worked with them and combined some of their established elements to get a custom scheme.
>How does it ride and what bike did it replace?
This is a purebred race bike, and rides as such. It’s stiff and responsive, but comfortable enough. Its limitations in handling lie solely with the rider, though I can at times see why a higher BB might be desirable. This was my first race bike (road or CX), but since then I’ve ridden modern production steel, aluminum and carbon road bikes, as well as a traditional aluminum cross bike. I feel that material defines what can then be done with the geometry and design of the bike. In the end all elements combine to determine ride quality. I wouldn’t claim there’s anything magic or special about the ride, more than what the rider projects on the bike. In addition to CX, the ’vagen sees a lot of #sportgrus, but my summer touring has been done on the roadbike.

>A hand-built cyclocross bike is pretty specialist, does this mean you have a collection of exotic bikes?
I think the cross market, although growing, is under-served. Sacha made some specific design decisions that larger companies would never make; the seatmast allows for the rear brake cable to run straight through (which looks amazing) and the seatstays have custom cantilever posts for Paul Components brakes. Other than the ’vagen, my stable is unremarkable: I have a steel taiwanese singlespeed cross bike, a Canyon Ultimate AL. I’m plenty satisfied.

>Campy Chorus is a nice Euro touch, were you not tempted to use SRAM to keep the US feel? The original SRAM Force cranks wore out, the Chorus cranks were what I had lying around. SRAM is a multinational corporation that undervalues keeping their product design in-house. Although this is sadly an American attribute, I don’t feel their products have an affinity with the USA on the level the privately owned components manufacturers have with their respective countries. That said, SRAM supports ’cross much more than its competitors, and I appreciate that.

Do you watch Portlandia?
It’s on SVT, so lot of Swedes have that show as their only reference to the city — that can be tiresome. I don’t think the creators envisioned that backwards equation. I watch it and have a laugh, and in turn often laugh at myself.

Bikes of the bunch - Sempreverde

The winner of the 2013 H30 Swedish CX National Championships rode to victory on a home made, steel tubed bike with disk brakes. CX Sweden spoke to Henrik Hågård about his stunning creation and the thought process behind it.

>So how does one go about creating a bike from scratch?
>How did the design process work?
>Forks, we often see even major frame makers choosing off the shelf forks, why, and did you take this route
>Painting, was this again something you did yourself or did you use a car body shop?

>You've a family and a full time job, this must have eaten up a fair few evenings and weekends?
>What's behind the name "sempreverde"

>Henrik, you went with disk brakes?
>How does it ride compared the mainstream bike available?

>Would you do it again/are you taking orders?

>And finally

Bikes of the bunch - Godspeed

In the first of what will be an ongoing series of articles about the bikes within the Swedish CX community, CX Sweden's Stuffmeister talks to Johan Pettersson about his latest creation, Cross3, and the background behind Godspeed cycles in Göteborg.

> So how does one go about creating a bike from scratch?

> Forks, we often see even major frame makers choosing off the shelf forks, why, and did you take this route?

> Painting, was this again something you did yourself or did you use a car body shop?

> You've a family and a full time job, this must have eaten up a fair few evenings and weekends?

> What's behind the name "Godspeed", is it really from Shakespeare's A midsummer Night's Dream?
Från lexicon: godspeed
\god"speed`\ (?), n. success; prosperous journeying;

> Johan you've got a real eclectic mix of components, (Campy 10speed shifters with an XTR 8 speed cassatte and rear mech, Red chainset, what's going on with those brakes as well?). Was this just a further excuse in engineering or simply what was left in the parts bin

> How does it ride compared the mainstream bike available?

> Would you do it again/are you taking orders?

Something different for 2013?

Well the CX season is drawing to a close, the snow has set in, and the long dark days aren't lightening up quickly enough.

So what is there to do that's vaugely CX related?

Well you could play video games and learn to ride rollers at the same time, Bruno Senna the F1 driver shows you how:

Or you could ride your bike along the beach, naturally the Dutch have turned this into a niche and formed a racing community around the idea:

Or you could plan a CX race in the style of the Morvelo guys from Brighton. In their words:
"Doing away with the traditional format of a single 1hr long race and instead getting our influence from Motocross and BMX racing, CityCross will be run over a series of "Motos". The top 50% of each Moto will qualify for the Semi Finals. The top 50% of the Semis will be rewarded with a race in the Final.

Each race will be a 30 minute blast around a course that will comprise of man made obstacles, multiple lines, rubble heaps, barriers and more. Testing skills and speed in races that mix up superb close racing with some good old fashioned fun. Much like how you used to race your friends around the streets and woods on BMXs taking in all manner of detours and obstacles."

The joy of tech, part one - going for a ride.

What could be simpler than getting on your bike and pedalling around a few back roads for a couple of hours of exercise?

Well, as it turns out, in this day and age we can make it as convoluted as we wish. This week CX Sweden's Stuffmeister pops out the door for a spot of riding, eventually, after everything is charged, connected, configured, and calculated.

OK, so you're heading out the door for a ride, however remember it's winter, it's cold, and there are icy puddles everywhere, what does the traditional cyclist do? Dons overshoes, or for extreme conditions full winter boots. However the tech savvy cyclist will first plug their inner soles into their computer to warm them up, thus enabling them to continue wearing their summer racing shoes well into winter for additional style points.

So whilst their shoes are warming its time to plan a route. Simple right? The traditional cyclist knows their territory like the back of their hand, if not then they'll pull a map out and string together a route taking in the terrain he feels like riding that day. The tech savvy cyclist? Well, as the computer is already on then he can check the area out on Strava and search for King of the Mountain segments that are within his reach and plan the easiest route to the base so he's fresh for the challenge. Don't forget to check the weather online for wind direction and strength, nothing says amateur mistake like riding to a hill then having to put up with the indecency of a headwind.

Basic cx training coming up...

So twenty minutes later with a route planned, maybe even loaded on to his head unit of choice so he'll know when to turn, he's ready for the off. Except he's not, first he needs a GPS connection accurate enough for the US military, then he'll need to configure his power meter of choice so he'll know the exact effort he's putting out.

Now he is ready to roll and take back the KoM from the club mate who stole it last week, expect he's riding solo today, so what’s to say that he hasn't just strapped his Garmin to the car and driven up the damn hill just quick enough to take it back without suspicion. No, what the tech savvy cyclist does is strap on the GoPro instead, it'll make great content for his blog. So now he's recording the ride, (providing its charged), and he's off.

Rolling along quiet country roads enjoying the scenery and slowing erasing the stress of the work week, that's our traditional cyclist. However the tech savvy cyclist has a constant irritation buzzing around his head, "when's the last time I charged my DI2?", "What happens if I'm stuck in 53x12 for the rest of the ride". EPS users can worry three times as frequently here.

When Strava has taken over...

So he made it back home, gears working or not. Our traditional friend throws his bike in the garage, (steel is real don't you know), whilst the tech savvy busies himself with loading up his stats and playing with the numbers, (whilst wearing compression tights, of course). Average speed and total ascent, old news, he needs normalized power outputs and training stress scores. Not to mention the much anticipated moment when Strava tells him if he's re-claimed his KoM and sends out that mail to his club mate saying "Uh oh! CX Sweden's Stuffmeister just stole your KOM!" Ooh let that kudos roll in.

Right, time to write, the traditionalist will keep a nice paper based training log, whilst the tech savvy will blog it, document it on FunBeat, start a thread on the forum of choice, (double points for doing this in multiple languages on different forums), and then publish the film.

So that's one 2 hour ride, and roughly the equal amount of time consumed in pre and post rituals.

Next time Stuffmeister goes training, and things get technical very quickly......

Do you know your Pipistrello's from your Pipisquallo's?

Tubular tyres, the absolute essential for serious crossers, a rite of passage from newbie to fully fledged CX Sweden member, or just an excuse to pay more for you push bike tyres than the ones on your car?

After spending the best part of a week gluing them, (real crossers don't tape), then playing around with different pressures, (how low can you go?), you've raced on them, (hopefully not rolled them), but have now bought into their advantages.

So, with five weekends completed, (and countless more Intro, Waffle, Wednesday VM's, and Kompis races) we've had courses offer us grass, hard-pack, light mud, water, and at last real mud. With one more round to come in December it's even possible that we could add snow and ice to that list.

That's five, (potentially six), different surfaces we've contended with, yet I'm probably not the only person who's raced all of them, (expect Falun, sorry guys), with the same tyres.

So if the first step is getting on to the tubular ladder, the second is creating a collection of tyres or wheels that can be chosen based on the course conditions. Whilst I was excitedly reading this article on Dugast's new Small Bird cx tubular, (identical pattern to their MTB tubs of the same name), I decided to create an over simplified table of tubular manufactures, their tyres, and my understanding of the intended use.

So as an excuse to go out and buy new tyres, use the following to access what you've got, and to plan what you want need.

A Dugast

”Just the facts please….” Dan Aykroyd, Dragnet

One 20 minute race, an average of 241 watts, 22 peaks of over 500, an average heart rate of 158, or 91% of max, and two minutes behind the winner.
That was my summary data from race 1 of Sunday’s Introcross. I used the “smooth” but twisty course at Slottskogsvallen to try out my PowerTap wheel and record some real world values from a cross race.

Interestingly Mikeal Flockart also raced with his PowerTap and took home the win in the following numbers: One 18 minute race, an average of 245 watts, and 27 peaks of over 500.

In order to compare those numbers more accurately we can say I that averaged 3.25w/kg v’s Mikeal’s 4w/kg, or alternatively if we’d raced on turbo trainers, I would have needed to put out an average of 296 watts to challenge him. This however this negates the technical requirements of riding in mud, negotiating 180 degree off camber corners, stairs, and mounting and dismounting, all whilst working at nearly max and being pressured by riders left, right, and centre.
